An opportunity exists for a motivated and politically astute person with a background in communications and/or advocacy.

The position of Advocacy Officer sits in the Communications and Design team, which is part of the CEO Unit.

The Role

Reporting to the Advocacy Coordinator, this position plays a key role in shaping and delivering Council’s advocacy and lobbying efforts in the lead-up to upcoming federal and state elections and budget processes.

We’re seeking someone with a strong interest in politics, excellent writing skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and delivering advocacy and lobbying strategies aligned with Council priorities
  • Preparing compelling advocacy materials, key messages, and campaign content
  • Managing issues and providing strategic advice to councillors and senior staff
  • Coordinating stakeholder engagement and maintaining strong relationships with key partners
  • Supporting the planning and execution of advocacy-related events and initiatives
  • Liaising with Members of Parliament, political candidates, and advisers to advance Council’s advocacy agenda

Key Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualification in either Journalism, Politics, Communications or Public Relations
  • Knowledge of local government, media and political environments
  • An understanding of the issues facing the local government sector
  • An ability to think strategically and speak and write persuasively
  • High level written, oral communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with multiple stakeholders
  • Experience working in an environment with tight deadlines and shifting priorities
