Burlington Berries is a leading berry production company located in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania. Known for delivering high-quality strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries to major national retailers, Burlington Berries combines innovative growing techniques with sustainable farming practices.
We have a new expansion project for 7ha of Strawberries. This is to be ready for production for planting in June 2026. This will provide Burlington the opportunity to install a state of the art irrigation system in Tasmania.
We are seeking a highly specialised Irrigation Consultant for a short term contract, to assess, analysis, design and oversee the procurement and installation of precise irrigation and fertigation systems. You will manage all aspects of the project, working with the company’s irrigation and technical teams and industry service providers to deliver the project within strict time frames and guidelines.
This is a short term contract for 3-4 months
Main Tasks:
- Evaluate site-specific requirements including drainage patterns and crop stages to determine optimal water quality, availability and application strategies.
- Design a system which allows for the efficient monitoring of irrigation timetables across the new site and complimenting the current system.
- Implement new irrigation zones and modifications to Freelands, to allow for the 7ha expansion
- Supervise irrigation system installations, with a focus on company sustainability goals and environmental standards.
- Participate in technical meetings, and senior level discussion updating on progress and deliverable outcomes
- Ensure work is carried on in line with company WH&S policies and strict project deadlines.
Key Experience
The successful applicant will:
· Have a proven track record in large scale irrigation systems for agriculture including design and installation
· Have detailed understanding of soft fruit crops and their water and nutritional requirements.
· Have experience in substrate (coir) and soil irrigation including in depth experience or training on Priva systems
· Be able to assess hydraulic and mechanical assessments of the site infrastructure, critical control points and risks
· Be experienced in international irrigation systems for installation in Australia
- Have strong diagnostic and problem-solving abilities in challenging field conditions.
· Have experience in health and nutritional assessments of water sources, crop requirements and fertigation mechanisms
· Be prepared to undertake topographical analysis of the soil profile including subsoil and surface drainage as well as erosion and infiltration risks
· Carry out an independent assessment of the viability of a renewable energy source for pump and fertigation systems, ideally looking at floating solar, tunnel solar panels
· Work within critical time frames which will require weekend and public holiday rosters.
· Live onsite, for 24 hour response as required accommodation will be provided.
· Work with international key consultants from US and EU requiring frequent out of hours calls as required.
Remuneration
Burlington Berries is pleased to offer a generous above the relevant award base salary plus superannuation depending on work experience and qualifications.
The specific package will be offered depending upon the meeting of the above selection criteria and including past experience. Salary package, leave and other entitlements are paid as per the Horticultural Award MA000028 and the National Employment Standard (NES).
