Your role:
As a Drone Operator, you will fly impressive Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), of various sizes and from various distances, to provide Army Commanders with vital information they need to plan and execute combat missions and direct troops safely during operations.
Your duties include, but aren’t limited to:
- Operate UAVs to observe the battle space
- Gather vital information to enable tactical decision making
- Observe meteorological data which would affect the UAV in flight
- Liaise with air traffic control to maintain safe flying conditions
- Have the ability to assist in flight planning and briefings
- Control the UAV in airspace with other manned and unmanned aircraft
- Operation of individual and crew served combat weapons

Location:
Drone Operators are employed with Surveillance and Target Acquisition Battery, with its Headquarters in Brisbane, Queensland and across Australia in each of the Gun Regiments at a Drone Operators Section, and at the School of Artillery at Puckapunyal VIC.
Salary:
In the Army you'll get paid a good salary from day one regardless of your age, experience or qualifications. Upon commencing training, your starting salary will be approximately $58,528 per annum plus 16.4% superannuation and your pay will increase as you progress through training.
On completion of your initial military training and initial employment training, you could earn $83,610 per annum plus generous super.
Eligibility:
For this role, you must:
- Be at least 17 years of age when you enter the ADF
- Hold at least a current learners licence and have a current provisional/probationary driver’s licence at the time of enlistment
- Have completed an Australian Year 10 education (or equivalent) with passes in English and Mathematics
- Be an Australian citizen. If you are not an Australian Citizen you may still be eligible to join the ADF if you meet certain criteria, please visit the ADF Careers Eligibility Page for more details
- Be reasonably fit and healthy. Keeping fit is a big part of joining the ADF. You’ll need to pass a physical fitness test before you join, but don’t worry, we'll give you tips to help you prepare
- Be able to successfully obtain a security clearance
