About us

The Department of Treasury and Finance provides economic, financial and resource management advice to help the Victorian Government deliver its policies. We strive for excellence in financial and economic management to improve the lives of all Victorians.

Economic Division

The Economic Division leads the development of advice to the Government, and implementation of priority projects, for key economic and policy priorities including economic strategy, regulatory reform, housing, social policy, government tax policy and intergovernmental financial relations to drive improvements in Victoria's productive and efficient resource allocation, competitiveness and equity across the economy.

Regulation Group

Regulation Group supports the Victorian Government in growing employment, material living standards and economic activity by providing advice on regulatory policy, reforms and frameworks, and facilitating reforms across state regulators and local government.

Regulation, Pricing and Risk Policy Team

Within the Regulation Group, the Regulation, Pricing and Risk Policy Team provides advice on regulatory policy as it relates to the building sector, housing and property market, consumer protection, social and justice services, energy, transport and other regulated sectors. The team also provides policy advice in relation to government fees and charges, risks to the State and government insurance.

About the role

This role requires strong policy skills and the ability to apply conceptual frameworks to a range of diverse economic, legal and regulatory policy questions and problems.

Day to day work in this role involves collaborating with team members and colleagues to contribute to evidence based strategic policy advice and communicate this both orally and in writing. The ability to produce good quality accurate written materials for managers and executives is essential, and sometimes this is required within short timeframes.

Key accountabilities

  • Use analytical skills and public policy and/or economic expertise to help Government deliver on its policy objectives
  • Prepare timely, accurate and accessible advice on economic and policy issues for senior management and government
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Participate in planning and decision-making in the team
  • Deliver timely work across multiple priorities and responsibilities
  • Contribute to fostering a positive team culture.

Key selection criteria

  • Strong conceptual, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Capacity to develop and contribute to robust and practical policy advice as relevant to Regulation Group objectives and areas of responsibility
  • Capacity to work collaboratively with team members and stakeholders, and contribute to a productive and supportive organisational culture
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including presenting accessible and persuasive arguments to senior decision-makers
  • Understanding of the role and influence of State government in regulation policy.

Experience and qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in economics, law, public policy or a related field are required.
