The importance of water to the health of our world can’t be overstated.
As the frequency and intensity of floods, droughts and storms increases, the water industry must continue to build resiliency and lead from the front.
Together with our clients, we are thinking and doing things differently to help pre-empt and prepare for what's next. Be a part of this dynamic and committed team of diverse water specialists and drive change for your community.
You’ll be able to apply our powerful global network of skills and decades of experience to create positive water outcomes that respect nature and nurture communities.
Who are we looking for?
We’re looking for a Senior Waterways and Drainage Engineer to join our Water Group.
In Western Australia, our 90-year partnership with the water sector has cultivated strong client relationships and a deep understanding of their challenges, equipping us to assist them in preparing for what lies ahead. Our team is very well known for water infrastructure and water resources engineering and science consulting, collaborating with industry leaders like Water Authorities, major mining firms, and Defense, among others. Join us to become part of a community of innovative thinkers, uniting top talent in the field to shape a positive future of water for our communities and next generations.
Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:
- Prepare engineering studies in hydrology, waterways, and drainage.
- Develop innovative technical solutions for complex bridge, culvert, floodway, waterway, wetland, and stormwater network designs from planning to detail.
- Maintain proficiency in surface water modelling tools such as RORB, TUFLOW, DRAINS, and HEC-RAS.
- Apply 12D and DRAINS skills for detailed drainage and stormwater design.
- Coordinate and supervise project teams—briefing, assigning, monitoring, reviewing, and providing feedback.
- Deliver creative solutions balancing technical needs, community expectations, and client goals.
- Engage with GHD’s Global Storm and Surface Water Service Line for ongoing development and knowledge sharing.
- Build and maintain professional networks to support technical and industry knowledge sharing.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure quality client experiences and repeat business.
- Prepare high-quality project reports and digital deliverables to professional standards.
- Manage project budgets, schedules, and deliverables per GHD’s project delivery and QA systems.
- Mentor and support junior team members’ technical development.
What you will bring to the team:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related discipline.
- 6–10+ years of experience in waterways, hydrology, or drainage engineering, including exposure to large infrastructure projects.
- Proficiency in 12D, DRAINS, RORB, TUFLOW, HEC-RAS, and other relevant hydraulic and hydrologic modelling tools.
- Strong experience in client-facing roles and multidisciplinary project coordination.
- Working knowledge of relevant Australian standards, ARR 2019, Austroads guidelines, and local authority requirements.
- Proven ability to deliver high-quality technical work within project timeframes and budgets.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) status or working toward accreditation is highly regarded.
