Purpose of the role

This role will create and drive a comprehensive government relations strategy in support of bp’s Australian ambitions. In addition to orchestrating an ‘always-on’ program of engagement to elevate our influence across government, you’ll interact with other stakeholders including trade associations and thinktanks to build coalitions aligned to bp’s position. Servicing several businesses in a matrixed organisation, the role will quickly generate insights to relevant political & policy developments, look for opportunities to best position bp, act as an emissary of bp’s senior leadership, and facilitate engagement by bp’s visiting leaders, policy experts, and Comms & External Affairs team members.

Key Accountabilities

    Contribute to public policy advocacy plans in support of bp Australia’s country strategy.
    Support the analysis of relevant policy and regulatory frameworks both federally and in all Australian states (less WA), with a focus in the areas of energy, resources, climate change, environment, and Northern Australia development.
    Lead the development and implementation of bp Australia’s government relations strategy, including:
      Identifying, developing and managing senior political (inc ministerial), government departments and regulatory stakeholders,
      Driving engagement plans with senior executive and business SMEs – ensuring bp is engaging with the right people at the right time,
      Proactively framing action plans to emerging political and policy opportunities & risks,
      Coordinate public submissions, and
      Collaborating with other team members in support of business objectives.
    Advocate bp’s position with legislative and regulatory bodies, in private meetings, and at external events regarding the merits and consequences of proposed policy settings.
    Recommend to external decision makers how legislation can be designed and deployed to deliver optimal energy transition outcomes.
    Optimise bp engagements with industry regulators and opinion formers including policymakers, industry trade organizations and customer groups. Help shape industry messaging and provide influential stakeholders with information to enable them to form well founded, fact- based viewpoints.
    Support issues and crisis management plans, processes, and events

Essential Skills and Experience

    Extensive Government Affairs experience – either in-house, a consultancy or political office
    Extensive experience in multi-jurisdiction major project and policy delivery in regulated industries with proven competencies in policy development and advocacy.
    Extensive experience working in public policy development, parliamentary processes and Australia’s political landscape
    Experience of coordinating advocacy activities across internal and external boundaries.
    Excellent networking capability, inter-personnel, and stakeholder management skills.
    A proven ability to work on and manage multiple simultaneous projects and achieve successful outcomes.
    A proactive approach to identifying emerging issues
