Primary objective
Provide strategic advice across a wide range of public policy and legal policy issues to the Chief Minister, departmental executives and
Government agencies, and play a key role in the development and implementation of major initiatives and projects of strategic value to
the Northern Territory.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide critical evidence-based analysis, strategic policy advice and comment on a range of legal policy and integrity issues that impact
on the Northern Territory.
2. Provide strategic policy advice to a range of projects, including the facilitation of strategic reviews, development of law reform and
coordination of external consultation. Provide stewardship of legislation under administration of the Department of the Chief Minister
and Cabinet.
3. Coordinate the development of comments on legal policy proposals of other business units and departments.
4. Develop and maintain effective collaborative working relationships and partnerships with government agencies and stakeholders at
local and national levels.
5. Prepare and review high-level reports, briefings and correspondence in areas generally related to legal policy, including ministerial
briefings, Cabinet submissions, legislative assembly briefings, and submissions into inquiries and reviews.
6. Represent CM&C and the Northern Territory’s interests at local and national levels.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Highly developed expertise and experience in policy research, legal or comparable policy areas, critical analysis and provision of high-
level strategic policy advice, demonstrating strong conceptual and analytical skills with ability to identify new policy approaches.
2. Excellent demonstrated oral and written communication skills with proven ability to prepare briefings, reports and correspondence on
complex matters for a wide range of audiences in plain English.
3. Proven collaborative skills with the demonstrated ability to establish and sustain productive working relationships with stakeholders
at all levels, and with people of diverse cultures.
4. Demonstrated ability to plan and manage multiple high-level projects, including delivering outcomes in an environment of competing
priorities and tight deadlines.
5. Ability to work as part of a small professional team with minimal supervision, in a challenging environment with stringent deadlines to
deliver high quality outcomes including a ‘can-do’ attitude.
Desirable
1. A relevant tertiary qualification in law or related discipline.
2. Hold or have the ability to obtain current Baseline Security Clearance.
