We are currently looking for a full time permanent Communications Officer to join our Membership & Engagement team.

About us

The Law Society of New South Wales works with and for the NSW legal profession. We're not all lawyers, but we work together to support the legal profession and ensure a just society for all.

About the role

We are seeking a versatile and detail-driven Communications Officer to join our Membership & Engagement team at Australia’s largest legal membership organisation. This newly created role spans marketing communications and policy communications, combining creative content production with high-quality proofreading and editing.

Working closely with colleagues across the Law Society - including our Policy team - you will transform complex and technical policy submissions into accessible, engaging content for members, stakeholders, and the community. From event invitations and website copy to social media posts and newsletters, you will craft compelling stories that highlight the value of the Law Society and its members, always with clarity, accuracy, and impact.

This role is ideal for someone with strong communications experience, outstanding writing skills, and an eagle eye for detail in grammar, spelling and style.

About the team

The Membership and Engagement team drives the Law Society’s overall marketing, communications, and membership strategy. It promotes the role of the Law Society and the value of membership to solicitors, while also highlighting the profession’s contribution to the community and access to justice. The department manages member engagement initiatives, partnerships, and communications channels to ensure members are supported, informed, and connected, and that the work of the Society is visible and valued across the legal profession and the wider public.

What you'll be doing

  • Draft, edit, and proofread a wide range of communications including policy summaries, reports, newsletters, EDMs, web copy, event invitations, and social media content.
  • Work with policy lawyers to interpret and reframe technical legal submissions into plain-English, engaging content that resonates with different audiences.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to plan and deliver communication projects and campaigns that promote the work of the Law Society and its members.
  • Ensure all communications meet brand and style guidelines, maintaining consistency and professionalism across channels.
  • Undertake quality assurance checks to ensure accuracy of content, links, data fields, and audience targeting.
  • Track and evaluate communication effectiveness through metrics and stakeholder feedback, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Support the production of digital, written, audio, and video content as required.

About you

  • Experience working in communications or marketing with the legal profession, nonprofit, government, or other advocacy-related fields.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with a flair for storytelling and simplifying complex ideas.
  • Strong attention to detail with excellent grammar and spelling.
  • Experience in digital content creation, including EDMs, social media, and web publishing.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, with strong organisational skills.
  • Collaborative and proactive approach to working with colleagues across different teams.
  • Familiarity with project management tools, such as Asana.
  • Tertiary qualifications in communications, journalism, media, public relations, marketing or a related field.
  • Strong written communication skills with a portfolio of published or produced work.
  • Ability to interpret and simplify legal or policy information for a diverse range of audiences.
  • Experience in producing compelling social media content.
  • Proficiency with communication tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress, Asana, Marketo or other CMS platforms) is desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop clear project plans and timelines, regularly communicate with stakeholders including project team members and monitor project progress, maintaining the required standards.
  • Ability to plan and organise self and others to ensure the completion of tasks and to manage and support others to succeed in their roles.
