What we are looking for:
We are seeking a Principal Environmental Officer to provide expert advice and leadership on environmental and sustainability matters across our Water and Waste Services directorate.
You will play a key role in driving initiatives that ensure compliance, address emerging risks such as contaminants, climate change and emissions reduction, and deliver long-term sustainable outcomes.
You will also engage with stakeholders, contribute to policy and legislation responses, support drought management, and represent Council on industry panels.
What your day will look like:
- Provide expert advice on environmental management, sustainability, and emerging risks to support informed decision-making.
- Lead compliance and risk management activities, including climate change, emissions reduction, and drought planning.
- Develop and implement strategic plans and policies to guide sustainable water and waste management.
- Represent Council with government, industry panels, and community stakeholders on environmental issues.
- Design and deliver water conservation programs and engagement initiatives across the community.

What you’ll need for success:
- Tertiary qualification (AQF Level 7 or above) in environmental management, science, engineering or relevant discipline.
- Extensive experience in environmental management within the water or waste industry, with detailed knowledge and understanding of environmental management systems, program management, community engagement, environmental risk assessment, auditing, and continuous improvement
- Demonstrated experience in project management and contract management procedures
- and ability to work strategically and use analytical skills to develop strategies, policies and plans to provide solutions to problems and to ensure long-term sustainability.
- Demonstrated experience providing leadership, mentoring and allocating resources.
- Excellent computer skills, particularly with the MS Office suite of programs and an ability to use geographical information systems, including MapInfo and intraMaps.
- Current Class C Queensland Driver's Licence
