Primary objective
The Education Liaison Officer Youth Court is an Authorised Officer under the Education Act and represents the Department of Education
in the Youth Court, providing appropriate education information to the court and to department staff to support student engagement with
learning.
Context statement
Engagement Programs, Performance and Reporting is part of Student Engagement Programs and Services and is responsible for developing
strategic, evidence-based, and data-informed initiatives to re-engage vulnerable, disengaged, and at-risk children and young people with
place-based approaches that are culturally appropriate, and trauma informed.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Advocate and influence stakeholders in the Youth Court on behalf of youth to ensure education needs are met, including the
identification of flexible education, training and/or employment pathways.
2. Preparation of statutory reports under section 68 of the Youth Justice Act 2005.
3. Work collaboratively to establish and maintain productive relationships with school leaders, corporate and specialist staff and relevant
external stakeholders.
4. Develop and maintain relationships with young people, families and external stakeholders to facilitate the connection with appropriate
support to ensure continued engagement with learning.
5. Contribute to the development of departmental policy and processes in relation to engaging young people who present in Youth Court,
maintain appropriately stored confidential records and produce quality data for reporting purposes.
6. Provide management and coordination of information within the Department of Education and to external stakeholder in accordance
with information sharing legislation, department policy, and the youth justice strategy.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Substantial knowledge of educational provision and pathways across stages of schooling and sectors including flexible learning and
inclusion programs.
2. Demonstrated ability to interpret complex education information and synthesise into statutory reports inclusive of recommendations
that are student centred.
3. Demonstrated ability to provide advice and communicate clearly, concisely and with influence, including the ability to resolve
challenging situations in a sensitive and professional manner.
4. Demonstrated experience in working in a multi-agency context with the capacity to develop in depth knowledge of the legislative
requirements relevant to the position.
5. Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with youth, families and stakeholders from diverse cultures to
form and sustain networks relevant to the youth justice and education engagement sectors.
